Your infant's first dental visit

The ODA recommends a first visit within 6 months of your child's first tooth. Here's why it matters.

Our Courtice practice was designed with families in mind. There are three main reasons to bring your infant in for their first visit.

Know if your home care routine is working

Infant teeth are softer than adult teeth and need special care. After babies finish drinking milk, wiping down their teeth and gums with a wet cloth or a very soft toothbrush helps prevent cavities. We can let you know if your routine is working well.

Learn if your child's teeth are developing appropriately

Sometimes baby teeth come in crooked or crowded. It's helpful to know early whether this might cause issues down the road, or if the teeth will straighten out on their own.

Start building trust between your child and their dentist

When children already have a relationship with their dental team, they feel more at ease as they grow. That early connection makes future visits much smoother.

What do the ODA and CDA recommend? The Ontario Dental Association and Canadian Dental Association recommend that children have their first dental check-up within 6 months of getting their first tooth—and at the latest around their first birthday.
